The European Commission is the EU's executive and by far its largest employer, with roughly 32,000 officials in Brussels alone plus thousands more in Luxembourg, the Joint Research Centre sites and delegations worldwide. It proposes legislation, manages EU spending and enforces EU law across dozens of policy Directorates-General. Almost every EU staff category and grade is recruited here, from AD5 graduate Administrators (basic €6,152.64 per month) to senior directors. How the Commission is organised and who it hires

The Commission is structured into policy Directorates-General (DGs) and services, each owning a field: DG COMP for competition, DG CLIMA for climate, DG CONNECT for digital, DG ENV for environment, DG DIGIT for IT, and many more. It hires the full range of profiles: policy officers and lawyers who draft legislation, economists, scientists at the Joint Research Centre, IT and project specialists, translators and support staff. Recruitment runs through EPSO open competitions for officials (mainly at AD5 for graduates and AD7 for experienced specialists), CAST Permanent for Contract Agents, and the Blue Book traineeship for graduates. The technical DGs draft almost exclusively in English, so French is rarely a hiring barrier despite Brussels's reputation.

Pay, grades and getting in

Commission officials are paid on the Staff Regulations grid: AD5 at €6,152.64 per month basic, AD7 at €7,876.27, rising through the senior grades beyond €20,000, with the 16% expatriation allowance and family allowances on top for eligible staff and the Belgian correction coefficient close to 100. The classic entry route is an EPSO open competition producing a reserve list DGs recruit from. Faster alternatives are the CAST database for Contract Agent FG III and FG IV posts, which recruit in months, and the Blue Book traineeship as a graduate foot in the door. Career progression follows Articles 44 and 45: automatic step increases every two years and competitive promotion on merit.
