Where the project management roles are

Project and programme management is one of the most in-demand skill sets in the institutions. The Commission's spending DGs and executive agencies (CINEA, ERCEA, HaDEA and others) run large funding programmes that need managers to handle calls, grants, contracts and delivery. IT-heavy bodies such as DG DIGIT, eu-LISA and the agencies recruit project managers for systems delivery. The decentralised agencies use them across operational and corporate functions. Depending on the post and category, the same work is graded as an AD Administrator, a Temporary Agent on the AD grid, or an FG IV Contract Agent, so the salary attached to a given vacancy depends as much on its category as on the responsibilities.

Grades, pay and entry routes

As an FG IV Contract Agent, project or programme management is a named CAST profile: register on the EU Careers portal, pass the reasoning and competency tests, and enter the database that recruiting services search. FG IV basic salary starts at €4,449.31 per month. As an AD official or Temporary Agent, the same work starts higher, from €6,152.64 at AD5 and €7,876.27 at AD7, but the AD official route runs through a full EPSO competition while agency Temporary Agent posts are recruited directly. Recognised certifications (PRINCE2, PMP, Agile) and demonstrable delivery track records are frequently listed as advantages in the vacancy notices, alongside the standard EU nationality and two-language requirements.
