Career path: AD vs AST vs FG

AD7 is an Administrator (AD) grade, covering policy development, legislative drafting, management, and senior specialist roles across the EU institutions. By contrast, AST grades (AST1-AST11) cover technical and administrative assistants, AST/SC grades cover secretarial and clerical support, and FG grades (FG I-IV) are Contract Agent fixed-term roles. AD careers run from AD5 (entry) to AD16 (Director-General).

AD7 Salary in 2026: Step by Step

Basic monthly salary for AD7 under Annex I of the EU Staff Regulations. Every two years of service moves you up one step automatically (Article 44). The net estimate deducts EU community tax, pension, sickness insurance and the solidarity levy at a flat ~25%; actual net varies with allowances and family situation.

What is a AD7 Position?

AD7 is a mid-career Administrator grade in the EU institutions, designed for professionals with significant relevant work experience. AD7 positions typically involve policy coordination, project management, legal analysis, or specialist technical roles requiring both academic qualifications and proven professional expertise. The current AD7 basic monthly salary ranges from approximately EUR 5,973 to EUR 6,764. Staff at this level often serve as senior policy officers, team coordinators, or technical specialists within their units.

How to Get a AD7 Position

AD7 positions are available through EPSO specialist competitions that require several years of relevant professional experience (typically six or more years after graduation). EU agencies also directly recruit AD7 temporary agents through their own selection procedures. Candidates who entered at AD5 can reach AD7 through internal promotion, usually after four to eight years of service with strong performance ratings. Some agencies specifically advertise AD7 roles for experienced professionals in fields like IT, law, finance, and scientific research.

AD7 Career Progression

From AD7, staff can progress to AD8 and above through the regular promotion system. Mid-career administrators at AD7-AD9 are good candidates for head-of-unit roles, which typically start at AD9 or AD12 depending on the institution. Lateral moves between EU institutions and agencies are also possible at this level and let staff broaden their experience across different policy areas.
