FG IV is the top function group for Contract Agents, reserved for university-educated staff performing administrative, advisory, linguistic and technical work equivalent to what junior and mid Administrators do. It is the fastest legal route into specialist EU work for people who do not want to wait through a full EPSO competition. Basic monthly salary in FG IV starts at €4,449.31 and climbs into the €9,000 range at the top grades and steps, before allowances and the correction coefficient. The listings below cover FG IV vacancies across the Commission and the agencies in law, finance, IT, audit, communication and project management.

What FG IV covers and who qualifies

Function Group IV is defined in the Conditions of Employment of Other Servants for tasks requiring a university degree of at least three years plus relevant experience. Recruitment usually starts from the CAST Permanent database managed by EPSO: you register, pass the reasoning tests and a job-related competency test for your profile (administration, finance, ICT, law, communication, project management), and recruiting services then search the database and invite shortlisted candidates to interview. Agencies also run ad-hoc FG IV procedures for specialist roles. Contract Agents receive the same allowances and JSIS health cover as officials, on a lower salary grid. See /contract-types/contract-agent/ for the full picture.

Salary and career ceiling

FG IV basic salary starts at €4,449.31 per month (grade 13, step 1) and rises across grades 13 to 18 into the €9,000 range at the higher steps, with automatic step increases every two years. That is materially below the equivalent Administrator (AD) grade for the same work, which is the honest trade-off of the contract-agent route, but you still receive the 16% expatriation allowance if you qualify, family allowances and the correction coefficient. Within FG IV the move from grade 13 to grade 16 takes roughly nine to twelve years; the longer-term ladder is reclassification to a Temporary Agent or AD post via a new selection or an EPSO competition. Frequently asked questions

What is FG IV in the EU institutions?
FG IV is the highest of the four Contract Agent function groups, for university-educated staff doing administrative, advisory, linguistic and technical work. It is comparable in content to junior Administrator work but sits on the lower contract-agent salary grid.
How much does an FG IV contract agent earn?
FG IV basic salary starts at €4,449.31 per month at grade 13 step 1 and rises across grades 13 to 18 into roughly the €9,000 range at the top steps, before the expatriation allowance, family allowances and the duty-station correction coefficient.
How do I apply for an FG IV job?
Most FG IV recruitment runs through the CAST Permanent database. You register on the EU Careers portal, pass the reasoning and competency tests for your profile, and wait for recruiting services to contact you. Agencies also publish ad-hoc FG IV vacancy notices directly.
Is FG IV a permanent contract?
Not initially. An Article 3a contract agent contract is fixed-term but can become indefinite in duration after the second renewal, typically after around six years. Indefinite means open-ended, not tenured official status; becoming an official still requires passing an EPSO competition.
