The main entry routes into EU work

There are four realistic entry doors. The AD5 Administrator grade via an EPSO open competition is the classic graduate route, requiring a degree but no experience and starting at €6,152.64 per month. Contract Agent posts, especially FG III (from €3,475.62) and FG IV (from €4,449.31), are the fastest legal way in, recruited through the CAST Permanent database in months rather than the long EPSO cycle. Junior Assistant (AST1) posts start at €3,754.39. And traineeships, above all the Commission's Blue Book, give a paid five-month embed on a grant of around €1,400 to €1,500 that opens the door to the other three. Each has its own eligibility and calendar.

What entry-level EU jobs actually pay

Entry pay depends heavily on the route. A graduate entering as an AD5 official or Temporary Agent starts well above most national graduate schemes, at €6,152.64 per month basic, plus the 16% expatriation allowance if recruited from another country. Contract Agents earn less for comparable work: FG IV from €4,449.31 and FG III from €3,475.62. Traineeships pay a grant of around €1,400 to €1,500, meant to cover modest living costs for a single graduate rather than to build savings.
