CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is not an EU institution, but its vacancies appear in this feed because it is a major European scientific employer that candidates for EU technical roles frequently also consider. Founded in 1954 and based near Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border, CERN is an international organisation with its own convention, member states, staff rules and salary scales, entirely separate from the EU. The listings below cover current CERN openings, predominantly for physicists, engineers, technicians and support staff. Treat these as international-organisation posts, not EU civil-service jobs.
It is worth being clear: CERN has no connection to the EU recruitment system. It is a European international organisation governed by its own founding convention, funded by its member states (which are not identical to the EU membership), and it employs staff under its own regulations rather than the EU Staff Regulations. That means CERN does not use the AD/AST grades, the EPSO competition system, the Staff Regulations allowances or the EU pension scheme. We include CERN in the feed because scientists and engineers who look at EU technical and Joint Research Centre roles very often look at CERN too, but the contractual terms, pay and pension are all CERN's own and should not be compared directly with EU grades.
CERN's recruitment is dominated by science and engineering: experimental and theoretical physicists, mechanical, electrical, cryogenic and software engineers, technicians and applied-science specialists, plus the administrative and support staff who run the laboratory. It offers staff positions for experienced professionals, fellowships for early-career researchers and engineers, technical and administrative studentships for students, and a doctoral programme, each with its own route on CERN's own careers portal. Applications go directly to CERN, not through EPSO or any EU system. Because CERN sits on the Franco-Swiss border, staff typically live in France or the Geneva canton, and CERN's pay and social conditions are benchmarked to the local Swiss labour market rather than to EU grades.
