What €6,000-plus buys you on the EU grid

The €6,000 threshold sits right at the graduate Administrator entry grade: AD5 starts at €6,152.64 per month basic. Above it, AD7 runs from €7,876.27, AD9 from €10,082.77, and the director and director-general grades climb beyond €20,000. Temporary Agents at the agencies are paid on the same grid, so an AD-grade agency post falls in the same bands. These are basic figures before the 16% expatriation allowance (for staff recruited from another country), household and dependent-child allowances, and the duty-station correction coefficient, which in higher-cost postings such as The Hague or Luxembourg lifts the figure further.

Gross versus net, and where the money goes

The salary figures on the EU grid are gross basic pay. Actual take-home is lower after three deductions: the EU pension contribution, the joint sickness insurance scheme, and the progressive EU community tax, which together take roughly a quarter of gross for entry and mid grades, leaving net at about three-quarters of the headline figure. Against that, the expatriation allowance adds 16% for eligible staff and family allowances add several hundred euros a month for those with dependants.
