About FG II positions, requirements, and career path

What is a FG II Position?

Function Group II (FG II) is a contract agent category for clerical and secretarial tasks in the EU institutions. FG II staff provide administrative support, data entry, document management, and secretarial services. This category requires at least a secondary education diploma. The current FG II basic monthly salary ranges from approximately EUR 2,123 to EUR 3,196. Contract agent positions at FG II level are typically offered with initial contracts of three to five years, which may be renewed or converted to indefinite contracts depending on the institution.

How to Get a FG II Position

FG II positions are primarily filled through the EPSO CAST Permanent (Contract Agent Selection Tool) process. Candidates register in the EPSO database, take computer-based reasoning tests, and if successful, are placed on a list from which institutions can recruit. Individual agencies also advertise FG II positions directly on their websites. The selection process for direct recruitment typically includes CV screening and competency-based interviews.

FG II Career Progression

Contract agents in FG II can progress through salary steps within the function group, with automatic step increases every two to three years. Moving from FG II to FG III or FG IV requires passing a new selection process for the higher function group. Some contract agents successfully transition to temporary agent or permanent official positions by passing EPSO open competitions.
