Career path: AD vs AST vs FG

AST-SC2 sits in the Secretary/Clerk (AST/SC) function group, covering clerical and secretarial support across the EU institutions. By contrast, AD grades (AD5-AD16) cover Administrator policy and management work, AST grades (AST1-AST11) cover technical and administrative assistants, and FG grades (FG I-IV) are Contract Agent fixed-term roles. Promotion inside AST/SC follows the same Article 45 cycle as AD and AST but with a slower step pattern and a lower entry threshold.
