What the EIB Internship is

A one-to-five-month paid placement in one of the EIB's directorates: Operations Directorate (lending and project finance), Risk Management Directorate, Finance Directorate (treasury, equity), Projects Directorate (technical and economic due diligence), Sustainability and Inclusion Directorate, Economics, Legal, Information Technology, Compliance, Human Resources, and Corporate Services. Interns work alongside permanent staff on real files: financial analysis, due diligence, research, project coordination, technical work.

Who can apply for an Internship

EU citizens and nationals of EU candidate countries with at least one year of completed university studies. Most placements look for finance, economics, engineering, IT, law, or sustainability backgrounds; specific requirements are listed in each vacancy notice. English and French are the EIB's two working languages. Strong English plus at least basic French is helpful, though many placements are conducted entirely in English. The EIB also runs targeted internship streams for candidates with disabilities and for under-represented groups.

What the Graduate Recruitment Programme (GRP) is

A permanent two-year structured programme that recruits a cohort of approximately 30 graduates each year into rotating analytical roles across the bank. GRP participants rotate through two or three different directorates over the two years, building broad cross-bank knowledge before settling into a permanent specialism. The programme targets candidates with a Master's degree (typically in finance, economics, engineering, or law) and strong quantitative and analytical skills. Selection includes written tests, case studies, multiple structured interviews, and an assessment centre.

What the stipend and salary are

Internship stipends vary by directorate and seniority but are paid and sufficient to live on in Luxembourg. The GRP is a permanent EIB contract from day one at the bank's standard entry-level Analyst salary, including the EIB's full benefits package (health, pension, supplementary insurance, mobility allowances). EIB compensation is competitive with private-sector graduate programmes in finance.

Where the work is

Almost all internships and GRP placements are at the EIB's headquarters in Luxembourg. A small number of placements occur at the EIB's external offices (Brussels, regional liaison offices in selected member states and partner countries) but Luxembourg is the default. Luxembourg is a small, multilingual city with a high cost of living offset by EIB salaries and allowances; the EU duty-station correction coefficient makes Luxembourg salaries broadly comparable to Brussels in purchasing-power terms.

Application timeline and tips

Internship vacancies are published continuously on the EIB careers portal. Applicants should check weekly and apply quickly since vacancies close after four to six weeks. The GRP runs annual recruitment, typically opening in spring with applications closing in summer and a September intake start. Strong GRP applications emphasise quantitative skills, sectoral knowledge (climate finance, infrastructure, development finance, equity), demonstrated analytical work (a thesis, internship outputs, published research), and clear motivation for a development-bank career.

Frequently asked questions

When can I apply for an EIB internship?

Continuously. The EIB posts internship vacancies on its careers portal as directorates identify needs. The Graduate Recruitment Programme has annual recruitment, typically opening in spring for a September intake start.

Is the EIB internship paid?

Yes, all EIB internships are paid. Stipends vary by directorate and level of study but are sufficient to live on in Luxembourg.

What is the difference between an Internship and the GRP?

Internships are 1 to 5 month placements with a stipend, open to students with at least one year of university completed. The GRP is a permanent two-year rotational programme from day one, with a competitive salary and full benefits, targeted at Master's-level graduates with strong analytical backgrounds.

Do I need to speak French to work at the EIB?

English and French are the EIB's two working languages. Strong English is required; basic French is helpful for daily life in Luxembourg and for some directorate-specific work, but many internships and GRP placements operate entirely in English.

Do I need to be an EU citizen?

EU citizens and nationals of EU candidate countries are eligible for both the internship and the GRP. The EIB occasionally recruits non-EU specialists for senior technical roles outside these early-career programmes.

Is Luxembourg an expensive place to live?

Yes, Luxembourg has one of the highest costs of living in the EU, particularly for housing. EIB salaries and allowances reflect this; the EU correction coefficient for Luxembourg also adjusts salaries to maintain comparable purchasing power versus Brussels.
